Investigative Documentaries

Open source investigative documentaries I have led or have worked on. All have been the result of a fusion of brilliant minds and specialists.

Anatomy of a Killing

In July 2018 a horrifying video began to circulate on social media. It shows two women and two young children being led away at gunpoint by a group of Cameroonian soldiers. The captives are blindfolded, forced to the ground, and shot 22 times. Through forensic analysis of the footage, this documentary proves exactly where this happened, when it happened, and who is responsible for the killings.

Awarded: Peabody Award, Webby Award, RTS Award, Scripps Howard Award, DiG Award.

Libya’s ‘Game of Drones’

The UAE has denied intervention in Libya’s civil war. But the BBC has uncovered new evidence that a laser-guided missile, fired from a UAE drone, killed 26 unarmed cadets in January 2020, that the UAE is still deploying drones and other military aircraft in support of its Libyan allies, and that Egypt is facilitating this intervention.

Sudan’s Livestream Massacre

On June 3, 2019, there was a massacre on the streets of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. This is the story of that massacre, told through the phone cameras of those who kept filming, even as they came under live fire.

This documentary analyses more than 300 videos shot in Khartoum on June 3rd. Using these videos, we can bring you a shocking, street-level view of the violence that was inflicted on protesters that morning – and the first direct testimony from men who say they took part in this attack.

Awarded: Webby Award, Lovie Award.

Sudan’s Secret Hit Squads

These are images Sudan’s government does not want you to see: teams of masked, plainclothes agents chasing down protesters, beating them, and dragging them off to secret detention centres in Khartoum.

Who are these hit squads? Where are these detention centres? And what happens inside their walls? BBC Africa Eye has analysed dozens of dramatic videos filmed during the recent uprising, and spoken with witnesses who have survived torture at the hands of the Bashir regime. Some of these protesters tell us about a secret and widely feared holding facility – The Fridge – where the cold is used an instrument of torture.

Turkey’s Ghost Ships

On January 24, a ship called the Bana set sail from Turkey. Four days later the ship vanished from the radar.

Where did it go? What was it carrying? And why does it matter? This documentary investigates secret arms shipments into Libya, and shows how foreign powers—in violation of UN resolutions—are fuelling a war that has brought misery to Libya’s people.

Death on the Border

In June 2022, shocking videos started circulating online, showing violent clashes between African migrants and Moroccan border guards. They were filmed on a tiny piece of land where Morocco meets Spain – a gateway into Europe – and show the bodies of African migrants being thrown to the ground, beaten and crushed.

Twenty-four people died in the incident, and many more are still missing. Africa Eye verified dozens of videos, collected testimonies from survivors and gained exclusive access to the border infrastructure to piece together the most comprehensive investigation into the tragedy and ask – was it preventable?
